Etihad Airways will broadcast this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix live onboard its aircraft, as part of a roll-out of live in-flight TV channels.
The Abu Dhabi-based national carrier, which sponsors the annual Formula 1 race, will allow passengers aboard some of its twin-aisle aircraft to watch this Sunday’s race via their seatback in-flight entertainment systems.
The broadcast will be made available following the launch of several live news and sport channels on 1 November 2013, including BBC World News, BBC Arabic, euronews and Sport 24. CNBC, CNN and Japan’s NHK World Premium will be introduced later in November, with Sky News Arabia following in the coming months.
“We are delighted to broadcast this weekend’s Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on many of our aircraft, ensuring that passengers who are flying on race day won’t miss any of the action from Yas Marina Circuit,” said Peter Baumgartner, Etihad’s chief commercial officer.
Following this weekend’s race, Etihad will also broadcast the US Grand Prix on 17 November and the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix on 24 November.
In addition to the Formula 1, passengers will be able to watch a range of other sporting events, including the ATP World Tour tennis finals, English Premier League and German Bundesliga football matches, and Euroleague basketball. Then in 2014, coverage will include the Australian, French and US Open tennis championships, the Winter Olympics, the Masters from Augusta and Ryder Cup golf, and the World Cup from Brazil.
“In-flight entertainment is a key part of the guest travel experience and the introduction of the eight live channels… will be a fantastic addition to Etihad Airways’ flights,” Baumgartner added.
Live TV will be available on 21 of Etihad’s wide-body aircraft by 7 November 2013, increasing to 37 aircraft by the end of 2014.
