Etihad Airways has commenced daily direct flights to Phuket.
The new service from Abu Dhabi touched down at Phuket International Airport for the first time on Monday, where it was welcomed by a traditional water cannon salute and a Thai dance performance. Flights will now depart Abu Dhabi every day at 0840, arriving in Phuket at 1800. The return service will then leave the Thai resort island at 2025, getting back into the UAE capital at 0025 the following day. All services will be operated using Etihad’s Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
“The new Phuket route is a natural expansion of our Thai network and a strong addition to our portfolio of leisure destinations, such as the Seychelles, Maldives and Sri Lanka,” said James Hogan, Etihad’s president & CEO. “With attractive departure and arrival times and seamless connections from more than 25 cities across the GCC and Europe, the new services will contribute greatly to the growth of tourism to the region.”
Hogan added that he expects the new route will be popular with “holidaymakers from the UAE and GCC as well as from key European markets including London, Milan, Munich and Paris.”
Phuket becomes Etihad’s second destination in Thailand, following Bangkok, and its seventh in Southeast Asia.
It is also one of 10 new routes launched by the airline in 2014. Already this year Etihad has commenced flights to Medina, Jaipur, Los Angeles, Zurich, Yerevan, Rome and Perth, with San Francisco and Dallas due to come on line before year-end.
