European carriers saw a 6.1% increase in international traffic during May year-on-year, new IATA statistics have found.
The traffic rose against a 5.3% boost in capacity, with load factors stable at 80.3%. Middle Eastern carriers saw the highest growth at 13.2%, followed by Latin American airlines with 9.1% increase and Asia Pacific carriers recording a 7.3% increase.
Overall the industry saw demand jump 6.2% year-on-year against a 5.2% increase in demand, slightly lower than April’s 7.6% boost.
“We are seeing healthy demand for air traffic to support and help sustain the pick-up in global economic activity,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s director general and CEO.
He warned strikes in France and Belgium could impact figures moving ahead, and continued to push for the Single European Sky (SES) to improve efficiencies.
