The climb to the top of Mount Everest may soon be free of ice and snow. The warning, made by scientists and backed-up by climbers, is a stark indication of the affects of climate change on the Himalayas.
“When I climbed Mount Everest last year I climbed the majority of ice without crampons because there was so much bare rock,” UK newspaper The Observer reported John All, an expert on Nepal’s glaciers, as saying yesterday. He added that comparing photographs of earlier climbs showed a consistent reduction in ice.
“I wonder when will Everest finally become a rock climb rather than an ice climb,” All added.
