Bangkok, Thailand (23 February 2010) – Exotissimo Travel has launched a new trekking itinerary in Northeast Vietnam, adding to its collection of unique adventure tours in Southeast Asia. Historically known as Tonkin, Northeast Vietnam is an enchanting area home to dramatic karst scenery, tranquil lakes and colorful ethnic minorities.
“This Tonkin journey offers a great alternative from Sapa and other trek routes in Vietnam. The treks are incredibly scenic, the ethnic tribes are more diverse and this region sees few tourists,” said Anton Jurgens, Exotissimo Vietnam Adventure Manager. “Besides, the overland journey allows for spectacular views of the rugged landscapes, which will not be possible on the overnight Sapa train.”
Tribes of Tonkin: Trekking Ba Be and the Northeast is a 10-day tour that goes deep into the remote areas of Northeast Vietnam. This program is suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness and curious to discover seldom-visited sights off the beaten path. It features a variety of activities to explore the region’s diverse landscapes and cultures.
Travelers first spend a day at leisure in Hanoi before heading into the Tonkin region in Vietnam’s northeast. The program in Ba Be National Park includes treks across terraced fields, a boat trip through the immense Phuong Cave, and a traditional dugout canoe ride across the picturesque Ba Be Lake. An overnight homestay with a Tay hill tribe family is the highlight of this leg.
Continuing to the Cao Bang and Lang Son areas, travelers will trek through highland forests and jagged karst scenery near the Chinese border. Along the way, they will have many opportunities to meet colorful ethnic groups through visits to local markets and a village homestay. This program culminates with an overnight cruise on Halong Bay to immerse travelers in a magnificent landscape of limestone islets and hidden grottos.
The Tribes of Tonkin program can be customized to travelers’ preferences. For shorter itineraries, a three-day Ba Be or a four-day Cao Bang/Lang Son trek is also possible.
