Expedia has announced that it has signed a joint venture agreement with AirAsia as it moves into the Asia Pacific market. Under the deal, a new company will be formed to operate an Expedia branded business in Japan, India, Southeast Asia and other East Asian markets and AirAsia’s AirAsiaGo and GoRoooms businesses. The agreement will secure Expedia’s exclusive distribution rights for AirAsia’s flights, which will be packaged with hotels. Likewise, in a separate venture, Expedia will become an exclusive travel partner for AirAsia’s inventory. “This partnership between two global brands and leaders in the travel industry comes at a time when online travel bookings are exploding in the region,” said Tong Fernandes, group CEO at AirAsia.
