The UK government has warned against all travel to certain parts of Tunisia as the country deals with the fall-out from a political assassination on Friday.
According to the FCO website, opposition politician Mohamed Brahmi was assassinated in Ariana, a suburb of Tunis causing protests outside the Ministry of Interior and in other areas of the city.
The Foreign Office warns of travelling to the Chaambi Mountain National Park area because security forces carrying out a “security operation” against fugitive groups.
Tunisia’s General Labour Union (UGTT) then called a national strike after the assassination which meant many flights in and out of the country were cancelled.
The incident came a day after figures were released by Tunisia detailing record UK arrivals in June.
The month’s figures represent a 31% rise on 2012’s numbers.
“We’re delighted to see Brits going in larger numbers than ever before to Tunisia,” said Tunisian National Tourist Office UK and Ireland director Wahida Jaiet.
“This year, we’ve worked hard to extend Tunisia’s appeal by showcasing our 3,000 years of culture, outstanding natural landscape, prestigious golf courses, authentic agrotourism experiences and boutique hotels, so it’s fantastic to see that our efforts have led to a record-breaking number of UK tourists visiting our shores.”
