AirAsia boss has dismissed rumours that he is seeking shares in Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB).
The AirAsia CEO, Tony Fernandes, was quoted by Bernama News Agency, saying: “I do not want to own airports and I do not want to own other airlines. I just want AirAsia.”
Fernandes did tell reports in Kuala Lumpur Thursday that he hoped to work with MAHB to develop new routes to improve passenger traffic into the country. He was optimistic that the AirAsia-MAHB relationship would improve given that there had been more communication between the two parties.
Fernandes’ comments come a day after MAHB released July performance data which indicated a 0.4% drop in passenger traffic from 6.37 million passengers in July 2013 to 6.34 million in July 2014.
According to the airport operator, overall passenger traffic fell due to a 2.3% decline in domestic traffic, while international traffic grew steadily at 1.6%.
“This traffic performance is better-than-expected considering the bulk of July 2014 was a Ramadhan month where travel was generally subdued,” the company said in a statement.
On year-to-date traffic, MAHB said it handled 47.7 million passenger movements in July. This puts MAHB on course for 85 million passengers, or about 7% growth for full year 2014.
