FIFA has done football fans ‘few favours’ by choosing emerging destinations to host future World Cups, Hotels.com has claimed. The website has warned that fans’ wallets will be hit hard when travelling to Brazil, Russia and Qatar for the next three tournaments as hiked prices will be placed on top of already expensive room rates. According to its Hotel Price Index, Brazil’s economic boom caused its hotel rates to soar 24% to $211 in the last year, while Russia was named as the most expensive country for Brits to visit, with rates in Moscow at $244 a night. Qatar’s capital Doha is the third most expensive in the list, at $277 a night. “Heavy demand for rooms pushes up rates especially where the supply of good accommodation is limited,” explained Alison Couper, global communications director of Hotels.com. “There is every indication that Brazil, where prices are already rocketing because of the country’s booming economy and growing popularity, will follow the same pattern. FIFA also did football fans few favours by picking Russia and Qatar for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. These destinations are already two of the most expensive in the world for hotels and staging the World Cup there is only likely to make them even pricier.” Last year, hotel rates in host nation South Africa increased 21% to $193, with Cape Town’s average rate at $200 (28% increase).
