The Fijian government has pledged an additional FJ$30 million (US$13.9m) in funding to the country’s tourism marketing body, Tourism Fiji, for 2016.
This marks an increase in total funding for Tourism Fiji of FJ$6.5m next year, compared to 2015, and comes as Fiji embarks on a mission to increase visitor arrivals.
The move was welcomed by the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO).
“The Fijian government has always been supportive of the work carried out by Tourism Fiji and the former FJ$23.5m budget allocation support has enabled Fiji to continuously increase its visitor arrivals through targeted and precise marketing campaigns in both the long and short haul markets,” said SPTO chief executive Ilisoni Vuidreketi.
“Fiji accounted for 41.6% of the total number of visitors into the Pacific region in the second quarter of this year, with over 192,070 visitors in this quarter alone. This number is expected to rise significantly with the increase in marketing budget for Tourism Fiji.”
Fiji’s tourism arrivals are expected to increase in 2016 following the recent announcement that Fiji Airways will start offering direct flights to the country from Singapore in April 2015.
