Finnair is reportedly looking to partner an Asian airline as it tries to develop Helsinki into a global aviation hub linking Europe and Asia. According to Bloomberg, the carrier is looking for an Asian accord with antitrust immunity that would permit joint sales and revenue sharing, much like transatlantic tie-ups already in place. As a Oneworld member, an Asian partner is most likely to come from the same alliance, however all Chinese, Hong Kong, Japanese and Korean airlines would be considered. Finnair already operates to three cities in Japan and three in China, with Chongqing due to join its network soon. Asian route revenues are expected to double by 2020, putting Finnair’s growth trajectory on par with major Middle Eastern carriers.
