A huge fire has engulfed the newly-constructed, unoccupied Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Beijing, CNN reported. The cause of the blaze is reportedly unknown, but the blaze was raging while fireworks marking the end of Beijing’s Lunar New Year celebrations exploded nearby.
According to a statement on Mandarin Oriental’s website, the 241-room Beijing property, which was scheduled to open in the summer of 2009, was empty at the time of the blaze. The 60 staff employed at the pre-opening office nearby are all thought to be safe.
