Firefly has launched its inaugural flight from its new southern Malaysian hub at Johor Bahru’s Senai International Airport. The Malaysian low-cost carrier will serve the Johor-Kuching route twice a day with services departing Johor at 7.30am and 6.35pm. The return flights leave Kuching at 9.55am and 8.30pm.
The Johor Bahru-Kuching flight marks Firefly’s first ever route from its new southern hub. From 16 June 2011, the carrier will expand operations at Johor with the launch of twice daily return flights to Kota Kinabalu. Both these routes will operate using the airline’s new 162-seat Boeing 737-400.
Firefly will also start flying to international destinations from Johor later this year. In August 2011, it will commence operations to two Indonesian cities, Surabaya and Bandung.
“These routes are already on sale and the load factor looks promising,” said Firefly’s Managing Director, Eddy Leong.
In the fourth quarter of this year, Firefly will commence operations from Johor Bahru to Bangkok. Additional domestic flights have also been scheduled between Johor Bahru and Langkawi as well as Johor Bahru and Penang in conjunction with the school holidays in the second quarter of this year.
Welcoming Firefly’s inaugural flight to Kuching yesterday, Sarawak Tourism Board’s CEO, Rashid Khan said; “I am pleased to welcome passengers from Johor Bahru to Kuching. At the same time, I also look forward to travel with Sarawakians to Johor Bahru on Firefly’s return flight to celebrate Firefly becoming a Johorian today. This is truly the spirit of Malaysia.”
Firefly chief Leong added; “The introduction of Firefly’s services underline our commitment to develop Johor Bahru as our southern hub, offering Johorians more travel choices and contribute significantly to the rapidly developing opportunities in commerce and tourism.
“Johor is a significant part of Firefly’s growth plan as our target market will now expand to mass passengers from the southern region, Singapore, Batam and transit passengers in East Malaysia. Firefly’s southern hub routes will also increase accessibility for tourists and business travelers into the commercial development of Iskandar Malaysia, a state project under the supervision of The Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).”
The event also witnessed the official launching of Firefly’s latest Airport Ticket Office which was opened to the public on 10 May. From its Southern hub at Johor, Firefly is targeting one million passengers by the end of 2012.
