More than five million Brits are planning to take a holiday in the UK this August bank holiday weekend.
According to the results of a VisitEngland survey, released today (24 August 2016), 5.1 million Brits are planning an overnight holiday trip in the UK this weekend, generating an estimated £1.25 billion (US$1.65bn) for the UK economy. In England alone, 4.6m overnight trips will be taken, generating £1.1bn.
“Record numbers of Brits have been taking holidays at home this year and with so much going on this summer the August bank holiday weekend is another chance to enjoy a great holiday whether on a seaside, countryside or city break,” said Patricia Yates, director of VisitBritain and VisitEngland.
The survey also shows that a further 3.6m people are still undecided about whether to take an overnight holiday trip over the bank holiday weekend, with about 40% saying they are waiting to see what the weather is like and 20% saying they like to decide at the last minute.
England saw a record-breaking first four months of the year in terms of domestic travel. From January to April 2016, Brits took 11m holiday trips in England, 8% more than the same period last year, and spent £2.8bn, up 22% year-on-year. Both of these results marked record levels for this period.
These figures follow a strong 2015, when domestic holiday trips and spending both increased 7% year-on-year to 43.7m holiday trips and £10.7bn respectively.
The number of Brits taking short breaks (one to three nights) in England was up 10% in 2015, while domestic seaside holidays increased 7%, city breaks rose 6% and countryside holidays climbed 12%.
