Thailand’s domestic carrier Nok Air suspends operations at Don Muang airport, Bangkok, due to flood threat
Bangkok’s second airport, Don Muang, ceased operations today as flood waters encroached beyond defences. Water began to run over sandbag embankments at the north end of the airport this morning. Airlines responded by suspending operations and shifting to Suvarnabuhmi, which is operating as normal and remains unaffected by the worst floods since 1942.
Nok Air Chief Executive Officer, Patee Sarasin, told The Associated Press that the carrier has suspend all services to and from Don Muang until 1 November, diverting flights to Suvarnabhumi instead. Though officials say the runway at Don Muang is still clear, Orient Thai Airlines has shifted operations as well.
The airport, usually the country’s domestic air service hub, has become a relief station for evacuees who now fill the hangars and home to the government’s Flood Relief Operations Center.
