Dubai, U.A.E., 24 November, 2009 - flydubai, Dubai’s first low cost airline, will expand its network to the east for the first time next month with the announcement today of the eleventh route on its network, Kathmandu.
flydubai’s first flight to Kathmandu, on Tuesday, December 15, will ensure this increasingly popular destination in the foothills of the Himalayas will be more accessible to a greater number of people in the UAE who will now be able to take advantage of flydubai’s commitment to making travel a little less complex, a little less stressful and a little less expensive.
Almost three times as many tourists have visited the region in the first half of this year as in the same period in 2008.
Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of flydubai, said: “Introducing Kathmandu will mean one of the most exciting travel destinations in the world becomes more accessible to people in the Gulf region. It will also give the Nepalese community of the UAE greater opportunity to visit home more often.
Nepal is home to many thousands of people who live and work in the UAE and flydubai’s new service will provide another option for people to travel between the countries to visit friends and family or to conduct business.
Kathmandu is Nepal’s main business centre and largest market. Because of its strategic position on the ancient trade route between India and Tibet, commerce has always been important to the lives of its inhabitants.
With a population of just over 1 million and a history stretching back more than 2,000 years, the medieval city of Kathmandu is considered to be among the most beautiful urban locations in the world. The old city is noted for its many Buddhist and Hindu temples and the old palace of the Newar kings at Durbar is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kathmandu is also the main jumping off point for trekkers and mountaineers seeking adventure in the Himalayas.
flydubai’s service, which operates four times per week to Kathmandu (FZ567) will leave Dubai International Airport Terminal 2 at 0700hrs, arriving at 1240hrs local time. The return flight (FZ568) leaves Kathmandu at 1340hrs arriving in Dubai at 1710hrs local time. Fares are from AED 350 one way.
All flydubai prices include all taxes and one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 10kg. Flights are available for purchase from the website (flydubai.com), call centre (04 301 0800) and travel agents from today.
The other ten routes in flydubai’s growing network are: Beirut-Lebanon, Amman-Jordan, Damascus and Aleppo-Syria, Alexandria-Egypt, Djibouti-Africa, Doha-Qatar, Khartoum - Sudan, Baku-Azerbaijan and soon to be operating flights to Bahrain starting December 13th.
The flydubai model is simple, with customers paying only for the services they want to receive. Passengers have the option to purchase checked-in baggage in advance at just AED 40 for the first piece and AED 100 for the second, weighing up to 32 kg, subject to availability. Checked baggage at the airport is also strictly subject to availability and passengers are advised to book online early to secure the space, as only pre-purchased baggage can be guaranteed.
A nominal payment of AED 5 allows customers to select their seat and just AED 50 secures the extra legroom positions. Bookings can be changed for a small fee, plus any difference in the fare, and food and drink can be purchased on board.
flydubai operates from a modernised and enhanced Terminal 2 on the north side of Dubai International Airport.
