Strictly off-limits to outsiders for centuries, Beijing’s Forbidden City attracted more than 16 million visitors in 2016.
China’s Xinhua news agency reported officials at the Palace Museum, as the complex is also known, as saying that the 16 millionth visitor – an 18-year-old Chinese student – entered the Forbidden City on 31 December.
The full-year total marks a 6.2% increase compared to 2015, and the complex has now attracted at least 15m visitors every year since 2012.
The 16m visitor total means that the Forbidden City attracted an average of more than 43,800 people every day last year. A daily visitor cap of 80,000 people was introduced last summer.
