Up to 18,000 hectares of forest in the Gunung Leuser National Park in North Sumatra, have been cleared in the past 10 years, the Jakarta Post reported forestry officials as saying. The deforestation has been blamed on refugees from Aceh, who have reportedly cleared the land to create villages. Officials now plan to relocate more than 550 families to West Sumatra, the report added. The 1.1 million-hectare national park has previously been the victim of illegal logging and palm oil plantations.
