Garuda Indonesia will open 18 new routes in 2009, according to Bisnis.com (from BaliDiscovery.com). The Indonesian national carrier is planning to commence direct domestic services from Jakarta to Tanjungkarang, Malang, Jambi and Pangkal Pinang. Kendari, Gorontalo, Palu and Ambon will be connected to the capital via Makassar, with the carrier also opening routes to Ternate (via Manado) and Tarakan (via Balikpapan). Other new domestic services will see Denpasar linked to Lombok and Kupang.
Internationally, Garuda plans to launch services from Denpasar to Adelaide and Hong Kong, while Jakarta will be linked with Shanghai (via Denpasar). Finally Yogyakarta will see the start of direct services to Singapore.
Garuda’s Corporate Vice-President, Pujobroto, said the opening of the new routes were part of the carrier’s overall growth strategy.
“The development of the new routes will be supported by 14 new Boeing 737NGs that will begin gradually arriving in mid-2009,” Pujobroto was quoted saying.
Garuda currently operates a fleet of 54 aircraft. When all deliveries of planes on order have been made by 2013, this will rise to a fleet of 128 aircraft.
