Gay Ski Week NZ will no longer grace the slopes of Queenstown after the event organiser went bust. The company behind the festival, Livewire Group, went in to voluntary liquidation this week after funds dried up.
An unnamed investor pulled out of the contract two weeks ago and organizer Mike Sandford was unable to find a replacement after approaching various candidates. Tourism New Zealand, Destination Queenstown, Air New Zealand and the New Zealand Tourism Minister refused their support to save the event which only attracted 20 booking so far this year. Sandford attributed the poor numbers to earthquake activity and date changes, necessary to avoid conflict with Rugby World Cup fixtures.
