Outbound expenditure by GCC tourists is expected to jump to AED367 billion (US$100bn) over the next couple of years, as reported by Emirates 24I7.
A recent report titled ‘Source Market Insights: GCC’ mentioned that Gulf nationals are big spenders when travelling abroad. In 2013, they spent over US$65 bn on outbound expenditure but this is set to increase to over US$100 bn by 2018, an increase of nearly 54%.
The ease of travel to Schengen countries with the relaxation of visa rules has also led GCC travellers to spend more. As per statistics, the GCC’s outbound market witnessed impressive growth over the last few years, with over 37 million outbound made in 2013, with Saudi Arabia leading the way with up to 21 m trips between 2012-13.
However, increasing disposable income has led to rise of UK and Germany as leading outbound destinations.
