At the recently concluded internal meeting hosted in Washington DC by the US State Department Special Envoy on ‘Climate Change’, the United Arab Emirates was represented by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and UAE Permanent Delegation at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The purpose of the gathering was to advance discussions on addressing international aviation emissions. Chairing the UAE Delegation to the summit, UAE Representative to ICAO, Capt Aysha Al Hamili commented that there was significant agreement amongst participating states that emissions of greenhouse gases from international aviation should be addressed multilaterally. ICAO is the appropriate forum to pursue this issue. Aviation is a global industry requiring a global solution. It is clear that most States strongly support the tremendous job that ICAO is currently undertaking.
Amongst others, this includes working toward setting a CO2 standard, implementing fuel reporting requirements, promoting the improved use of air navigation tools to reduce emissions, developing technical aspects of an international framework for MBMs, as well as assisting States in their development and deployment of alternative fuels.
