Travel buyers, TMCs and tour operators from around the world have joined the fight against APD, it was revealed today. Businesses including Dnata in Dubai, Argo Travel in Greece and Makino in Japan have sent a letter to the chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne and secretary of state for Scotland Michael Moore ahead of the budget announcement on Wednesday. The letter describes how business and conference organisers are avoiding London because of the taxes. “When flying to / from the USA to the Middle East over Europe, I try to avoid London specifically because of these taxes,” explained Chris Tomseth from Global Travel Strategies. “That means as a matter of tax-costs only I typically avoid flying BA or Virgin even though they are both great airlines.” However, national newspaper reports have indicated that Osborne will not impose the 5.1 percent APD rise this year. He vowed that there will be no more tax rises or spending cuts in this budget on BBC’s Andrew Marr Show.
