Go green, Thai tour operators urged
The comments of Pradech Phayakvichien, who is now an adviser to the TAT, come as air travel is being increasingly blamed for damaging the environment and increasing global warming, a Bangkok Post report said.
European tour agencies have taken notable steps to do business only with companies and hoteliers that have energy saving plans, he was quoted saying. In the report, he said the green business was becoming intensely competitive and some tour agencies had persuaded tourists to avoid countries that do not protect the environment.” It’s time for Thai tour operators to study how to run business with less fuel use and adopt more green projects,’ he was quoted saying. Based on a report by the UN World Tourism Organisation,
About 842 million people traveled outside of their home countries last year. Some 40% of those trips involved the use of airlines. The number is estimated to increase to 1.1 billion in 2010and to 1.6 billion in 2020, the Post said. Pradech said the UN body had endorsed the European Union proposal for the aviation industry to adopt plans to reduce the greenhouse effect tby 2011 or 2012.To do so, airline operators have to cut fuel use or implement energy-saving schemes while aircraft manufacturers have to build more fuel-saving aircraft.
