Work on the suspended ‘mataf’ (area for circumambulation around the Kaaba) is continuing vigorously after top floor of the area was completed last year in order to accommodate pilgrims with physical disabilities.
The General Presidency of the Grand Mosque and Prophet’s Mosque has accelerated efforts to put the final touches on the lower part of the temporary mataf, as reported by Arab News. The lower level has been installed and its entrances have been linked to the ground floor and outer squares.
Security, light and sound, air-passage and drainage systems have also been put in place. One of the three exits of the mataf bridges has been designated exclusively as an emergency exit. The bridge will be parallel to the old porch and will be 12 meters wide and 13 meters high.
The area spans 3,000 square meters and has an hourly capacity for 5,000 circumambulators, a local daily reported. The decorated barrier at the upper floor of the suspended mataf has been replaced with two glass partitions to enable pilgrims to maintain visual contact with the Kaaba.
