Authorities in China are planning to combat the scourge of graffiti on the Great Wall by providing a special area which tourists are allowed to deface.
Mutianyu, one of the Great Wall’s most popular sections near Beijing, now has a designated graffiti area, after “foreign tourists” were reported to have been scratching their names in the structure.
A report published by Beijing Evening News last week said the ‘No. 5 Fighting Tower’ building is a particularly popular spot for leaving graffiti. To solve it, they have now established a free graffiti zone for tourists at the tower.
“As many tourists like to carve words on buildings, we will develop the graffiti writing area as a new scenic spot of Mutianyu,” a director of the administration office was quoted saying.
It added that it would consider adding more graffiti zones, and even electronic graffiti boards, in future.
