A new hotel has opened in Cape Town, which is being billed as “Africa’s greenest hotel”.
Part of the Bon Hotels Group, the Hotel Verde is located 400m from Cape Town International Airport and features a range of environmental initiatives.
These includes building the hotel using concrete slabs containing recycled materials, to save approximately 1,279 tons of concrete, and bypassing the need for standard air-conditioning systems with the use of geothermal heat pumps, which tap the Earth’s natural heat. Hotel Verde also features photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and a water recycling plant that will reduce the hotel’s water consumption by 37%.
“We had the opportunity to change the status quo here. We looked at different ways of doing everything, right from the word go,” said the hotel’s sustainability consultant, André Harms.
Hotel Verde’s restaurant will offer seasonal, locally-sourced produce, while the gym is the first in Africa to have power-generating equipment, pushing power back into the hotel as guests work out.
The surrounding area also features an eco-trail for all those guests who prefer to exercise outdoors.
