The interim Egyptian government has imposed a state of emergency for one month after forces have started cracking down on supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.
The incidents, which have left many dead, have led to authorities imposing curfews across major cities and tourist resorts.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has warned against all travel to certain parts of the country (North Sinai) except for resorts on the Red Sea in South Sinai.
However, the FCO website went on to say that local authorities have stopped tourist excursions in Sharm el Sheikh and that in Hurghada police have advised tourists to remain within hotel grounds.
The FCO has advised tourists to follow the warnings set by local authorities.
The website also said that the embassy in Cairo would be closed on 14 and 15 August because of the unrest.
