Dubai, United Arab Emirates (TravMedia.com): The number of Gulf-based visitors to Wales is set to surge over the next several months, say UK tourism officials, in the run up to the 1 October Ryder Cup 2010 golf event taking place just outside Cardiff.
The biennial Ryder Cup is now the world’s third most-watched sports event, after the FIFA World Cup Football tournament and the summer Olympics, and the event’s recent high profile has thrown Welsh tourism into a global spotlight.
In much the same way as Ireland benefited enormously from the razzamatazz surrounding The K Club’s impressive staging of The Ryder Cup in 2006, Wales is poised to become the latest destination to reap considerable benefits from The Ryder Cup.
“Wales is a holidaymaker’s dream, with its stunning natural beauty and abundance of authentic hotels and eateries,” said Carol Maddison, Marketing Manager, VisitBritain UAE. “What the Ryder Cup 2010 event has done for Wales is highlight to the world that there is significant benefit and incredible value on offer to tourists looking to see beyond the City of London on their next visit to the United Kingdom.”
For active travellers, there is abseiling, climbing, fishing, diving, surfing, and, of course, golf. Wales also hosts excellent concerts at Cardiff’s Millenium stadium, as well as international rugby and cricket. And perhaps the country’s greatest attraction is its culture, arts, heritage, and history.
Finally, Wales’ well-established network of airports, roads, and railway lines means that travel to and from the country, via any point in Europe, is now as much a positive part of the Welsh holiday experience as the actual sightseeing.
