Almost half (42%) of all Brits believe that the UK is undervalued as a holiday destination according to new research by UK short break specialist, Butlin’s.
The research comes as the company prepares to celebrate its birthday later this month, marking 80 years of its seaside resorts.
As part of the new research, Brits were asked what they considered to be the ‘essentials’ for a great family holiday. Sixty-percent said their choice of holiday would be based on affordability, followed by almost half of all respondents’ stating they look for a variety of places to eat (47%) and access to the beach (46%). Over a quarter (27%) said they chose a holiday that offered family entertainment and friendly staff.
Domestic tourism within Britain is on the rise. Latest figures from the Great Britain Tourism Survey show that domestic holidays were up 3% during January – October 2015 with 49.8 million trips over this period. More Brits are also heading to the beach with 15.2m domestic seaside holidays during January – September 2015, up 5% on the same period the previous year.
VisitBritain/VisitEngland director Patricia Yates said: “Our wide variety of beaches – from stretches of golden sand and secluded shores to rugged coastlines and cliffs perfect for hiking – are particularly attractive for short breaks. 7.7 million Brits opted for a short seaside getaway of 1 to 3 days during the first nine months of 2015, an 11% increase on the same period in 2014.”
