Hawaiian orders A321s
Hawaiian Airlines has signed a deal with Airbus to acquire 16 new A321neo aircraft, with options for a further nine.
The single-aisle aircraft – which is the largest version of Airbus’ narrow-body series – will be used on routes between Hawaii and the US West Coast. Deliveries will run from 2017 to 2020.
“The A321neo will be the most fuel-efficient aircraft of its type,” said Mark Dunkerley, president and CEO of Hawaiian Airlines. “With its slightly smaller size we’ll be able to open new markets that are not viable for wide-body service, while also being able to augment service on existing routes to the West Coast of North America.”
The A321neo, which is the new fuel-efficient version of the existing A321, will seat approximately 190 passengers in a two-class configuration. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the aircraft have a total list-price value of approximately US$2.8 billion if all of the options are exercised.
Hawaiian currently operates a fleet of 43 aircraft, but has outstanding orders for 13 new A330s and six A350-800 aircraft, along with the A321s. Its existing fleet of 16 Boeing 767s will be phased out over the next 10 years.
