Heathrow Airport has announced 2012 was a record year for the airport with 70 million passengers.
The figure showed a 0.9% increase on 2011, with the airport also seeing its busiest December up 2% to 5.6m. More flights to Brazil boosted services by 21.6% in 2012 while Middle East and central Asia routes saw increases of 3.4% and East Asia by 6.2% and North Atlantic routes by 3.2%.
Demand for flights into Africa and India dropped after airlines reduced capacity or cut services. European traffic was up 0.5% with Germany and France performing over Italy and Greece.
“The figures for 2012 show Heathrow is delivering higher passenger numbers despite a tough economic climate. At the same time passenger satisfaction reached record levels,” said Colin Matthews, chief executive at Heathrow. “Over the next twelve months we will continue to improve the passenger experience and focus on our investment programme, as we move towards completion of the new Terminal 2.”
