Heathrow Airport recorded its busiest September this year with passenger arrivals up 7.6%. Figures from BAA have shown that an increase in long-haul routes has boosted operations at the airport. These include Brazil (up 27.1%), China (10.3%) and Russia (23.7%), which are destinations served only by Heathrow. In addition, 6.5% more Brits headed to North America and arrivals to South America grew 16.4%. New York, Dubai and Dublin were the most popular routes. “Heathrow’s record September figures underline that transport links are vital to our economy,” said BAA Chief Executive Colin Matthews. “The growth reflects an improved outlook for our airline customers and an increase in business confidence, as shown by cargo figures which continue to outperform the pre-recession peak.” The operator saw a 3.3% increase in passengers across all its airports, with a 2.2% rise in Edinburgh and level figures at Southampton. Stansted suffered a 4.3% drop in passengers as more carriers move their flights and Scottish traffic declined 5.7% and 5.1% at Glasgow and Aberdeen respectively, following the collapse of flyglobespan.
