Delays and cancellations will be reduced at Heathrow Airport as a new arrivals system is put in place.
According to NATS a new method that assesses aircraft by the time away instead of distance will “radically cut” delays and cancellations at the crammed airport.
By factoring in headwind conditions to the distance NATS said it will be able to separate aircraft more effectively and save 80,000 minutes of delays a year.
The new system will be operating by spring 2015.
“The introduction of time based separation at Heathrow will be a world first and deliver major benefits for our customers – both Heathrow Airport and the airlines. It will reduce delays and cancellations while improving the airport’s resilience against disruption. That’s why we’ve accelerated the project to bring it into operational use in 2015,” said NATS managing director operators Martin Rolfe.
