The Heritage Christchurch hotel officially reopened this week.
Set in the 100-year-old Old Government Building on the city’s Cathedral Square, the hotel suffered damage during the 2011 Canterbury earthquake, and has been placed behind the ‘red zone’ cordon for the past two and a half years.
But following a restoration, the Heritage Christchurch was finally reopened this week by New Zealand’s governor-general, Sir Jerry Mateparae.
“The reopening of the Old Government Building is a potent symbol that Christchurch will be rebuilt, and that after the heartache of recent times, there is a brighter future ahead,” the governor-general said at the opening ceremony.
The building dates back to 1913 and became a hotel in 1996. It is registered as a Category One Building on New Zealand’s Historic Places Trust register.
Facilities at the luxury hotel include Heritage Christchurch include a range of one- and two-bedroom suites, a health club, swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi.
