Those travelling out of Hong Kong are facing higher fuel surcharges put in place by 11 airlines, The Standard reported. It said the Civil Aviation Department had also allowed two other carriers to maintain their current surcharges.
Among them, Cathay Pacific Airways and Singapore Airlines, will raise their surcharges which will range from HK$171 (US$22) to HK$710 (US$91) from June 1. The daily said Air China, China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines would raise their charges from HK$125 to HK$171 for short-haul journeys. Air Canada, Air Mauritius and Turkish Airlines will raise their surcharges from HK$518 to HK$710 while Aeroflot will increase its levy from HK$508 to HK$620.
Pakistan International Airlines will charge HK$143 and HK$160 against HK$103 and HK$120 now, but All Nippon Airways will keep its surcharge at the existing level of HK$123 next month before increasing to HK$125 in July.
The report said Saudi Arabian Airlines and Nepal Airlines were not raising their charges.
Travel Industry Council executive director Joseph Tung Yiu-chung was quoted saying that he did not think an extra few hundred dollars in costs would deter people from travelling.
