Hong Kong wants to stimulate its tourism industry by strengthening travel from neighbouring Guangdong province and Macau, CCTV.com reported.
Tourists from the Chinese mainland form the core of Hong Kong’s tourism industry with most coming from Guangdong. Over 12 million arrived from Guangdong last year and the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) wants to expand the one-year multiple-entry visa to other cities in the province.
One suggestion, according to CCTV.com, that came out of a meeting of government representatives was for convenient visa procedures for Shenzhen be extended to other cities in Guangdong province.
HKTB Chairman, James Tien, was quoted saying; “I hope the new policy put into effect in Shenzhen, could include other cities in Guangdong province such as Dongguan, Zhongshan, Shunde and Zhuhai.”
The report said the HKTB has estimated the number of tourists this year would shrink more than 1.6%. It added that the board planned to step up advertising, especially on the mainland.
