August raised the bar in terms of passenger traffic and flight movements, setting new monthly records at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).
Fuelled by high demand during the traditional summer peak season, passenger traffic continued its upswing, registering a year-on-year growth of 6.5% to a new record high of 5 million. This growth was mainly driven by increases in visitors’ traffic and transfer passengers, up 10% and 8% respectively. Meanwhile, flight movements also reached a new high of 28,940, up 6.7%, breaking the previous record set in March 2011.
HKIA also reported a new high of more than 249,000 passengers who used the ferry services at the SkyPier connecting the airport to eight ports in the Pearl River Delta, which represented a year-on-year growth of 11%.
Year to date, HKIA has handled a total of 35.9 million passenger trips, representing a growth of 5.9%, and flight movements amounted to 220,315, up 10.9%.
