Air traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) continued to fall in July, however the declines narrowed, especially in terms of cargo which ended its run of double-digit drops since November 2009. During July, the airport handled a total of 291,000 tons of cargo, 4 million passenger movements and 23,315 air movements, representing year-on-year declines of 8.3%, 9.5%, and 9.9% respectively.
With the exception of plane movements, the results represented a marked improvement compared to the results from the first seven months of the year. Year-to-date, HKIA’s throughput dropped 18.1% to 1.8 million tons, passenger traffic fell 8.4% to 26.4 million, while aircraft movements declined 8.0% to 161,605.
The airport’s CEO, Stanley Hui, said that the easing of public fears about A(H1N1) flu and the summer travel peak were the two major reasons for the improved performance. “The latest figures indicate that the downward momentum may have slowed. While we believe air traffic figures will see milder drops in the months ahead, it will take some time before overall traffic performance returns to pre-crisis levels,” Hui said.
