The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and Cathay Pacific Airways have launched a new joint series of mobile apps using augmented reality technology. The ‘DiscoverHongKong.AR’ app features more than 100 attractions, 5,000 shops and 2,000 restaurants, as well as malls and markets across Hong Kong. Visitors can use the camera of their phone as a viewer and points of interest will appear overlaid on the phone screen. They can also tap each of these points of interest for detailed information and refer to the offline map for transportation routes. The other application, ‘DiscoverHongKong – City Walks’, offers four themed walking trails in Hong Kong’s urban areas, and uses augmented reality technology to provide information on the attractions along the trails. There is also a search function to locate shops, restaurants, MTR stations and Wi-Fi hotspots near the trails.
