Room rates paid for leisure hotel stays increased 4.2% in August 2013, according to the latest data from Pegasus Solutions.
In its latest Pegasus View report, the company’s revealed that the total volume of electronic hotel transactions last month was 0.2% lower than in August 2012, but this was offset by the rising rates. Bookings are expected to slow again this month, but will then rebound in October and December 2013, with rates expected to climb 2-4% globally. Year-to-date, leisure bookings are now 2.2% higher than in 2012, with rates rising 2.8%.
In the corporate travel market, bookings were 1.5% down in August 2013 compared to the same month last year, while rates were virtually unchanged. Year-to-date however, bookings have now increased almost 3.0%, with rates 0.6% higher than last year.
“New opportunities for hotels to engage directly with the online consumer are emerging almost monthly,” said David Millili, CEO of Pegasus Solutions.
“Beyond the desktop and mobile presences, hotels need to ‘own’ their digital presence to leverage opportunities for direct bookings through tools like the Google Carousel and TripAdvisor’s soon-to-be-released TripConnect. Our data shows guests are booking online, and paying solid rates. It’s up to the hotel to steer those bookings back to the brand site,” he added.
