The hotel price barometer published by the online hotel reservation service www.hotel.info for the month of November indicates an increase in hotel overnight rates across the board.
The online hotel agent has compared its hotel price enquiries from November 2009 with data from previous months and with the information it recorded for the same period last year.
The results show a clear upward trend in hotel prices compared with the previous months, both in Europe and around the world. While, with just a few exceptions, this November’s hotel rates were still lower than in November 2008 (which was when the effects of the global economic crisis first became apparent), prices did recover markedly last month.
In more than half of the world’s major cities, the hotel price barometer shows a rising trend. Only Amsterdam, Istanbul, Lisbon, Dubai and Mexico City are continuing to struggle with single-digit percentage falls in hotel prices. All other major centres recorded at least stable room prices in November, compared with previous months, with the majority even registering tangible increases.
Cities such as Stockholm, Helsinki and Warsaw, whose hotel rates had fallen particularly heavily during the crisis of 2009, bounced back in November, registering rate increases of up to 15%. Of all the world’s major cities, it was Rio de Janeiro in particular that surged ahead. The rise here reached a massive 20%. Hotel rates in New York, Tokyo and Shanghai also showed tangible signs of recovery.
Note: the hotel price barometer is a snapshot of the changes in hotel overnight rates. At the beginning of 2010, hotel.info will publish an analysis in its hotel price index for the entire year.
