Cunard Line has been inundated by travellers wanting to be part of Queen Mary 2’s history-making circumnavigation of Australia, announced last week.
The voyage may be two years away but more than 1300 people registered their interest on Cunard’s website in just three days, with almost 1000 registrations made in the first 24 hours.
With most people expected to travel with a partner, this equates to more than 2500 prospective passengers.
Fares and the opening date for bookings will be announced by Cunard shortly. Meanwhile Cunard will continue to take expressions of interest at www.queenmary2.com.au/register and will send all details of the voyage fares to registered parties and travel agents once they are finalised.
The announcement of Queen Mary 2’s “Royal Circumnavigation of Australia” in 2012 was made as the grand ocean liner paid her third visit to Australia earlier this month, attracting tens of thousands of spectators to the foreshores of Sydney Harbour, Adelaide and Fremantle.
The largest ship ever to visit Australia, Queen Mary 2 will call at eight Australian ports during her circumnavigation including Sydney, Fremantle, Adelaide and the Whitsundays as well as maiden visits to Cairns (Yorkey’s Knob), Darwin, Melbourne and Brisbane*. Her voyage will also include a call at Bali.
Australians will be able to choose from three circumnavigation options - a 22-night voyage departing Sydney on February 14, 2012, a 20-night voyage departing Fremantle on February 8, 2012 and a 21-night voyage departing Adelaide on February 11, 2012.
Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which represents Cunard, said she was very excited by consumer response to the voyage.
“Whilst we’re yet to announce our itineraries or our fares, it is clear that thousands of people want to part of history on this amazing voyage,” Ms Sherry said. “It’s a fantastic response.”
Ms Sherry said that whilst the strongest interest had been from holidaymakers keen to undertake the circumnavigation from Sydney, there were also a large number of registrations for the Fremantle and Adelaide circumnavigation options.
