Hull has beaten off three other UK cities to be named the UK City of Culture in 2017.
The city beat Leicester, Swansea Bay and Dundee for the title, which is handed out every four years and is expected to give an economic boost to the region.
VisitEngland’s chief executive James Berresford welcomed the announcement.
“This cultural badge of honour is a tremendous opportunity for Hull to thrive as a tourist destination and attract important inward investment, and VisitEngland looks forward to helping with this. I wish Hull all the best in maximising the potential of the city’s cultural heritage and look forward to the many celebrations and events to come as a result,” he added.
Derry-Londonderry currently holds the title for this year.
