After criticising development fees imposed on passengers travelling from Delhi and Mumbai airports in India the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has slammed the Indian government’s decision to hike airport and aeronautical charges by 10% from this month.
“India continues to deal the airline industry one successive blow after another. First, approval was given for a 10% increase in charges at Mumbai and Delhi airports…. Then a development fee at Delhi and Mumbai airport was given the go-ahead,” an IATA spokesperson was quoted saying by Livemint.com.
“Not only have these increases not been justified, there was no attempt whatsoever to consult with the industry, which is required under (rules of) the International Civil Aviation Organisation,” IATA added.
Earlier the Airports Authority of India said airports at Chennai, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, Goa and Ahmedabad would soon get the government’s nod to levy development fee on passengers to raise funds for their expansion.
