InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced the signing of three new IHG Academies in China. The three facilities are being developed in partnership with the Tianjin Vocational Institute, Guangzhou City Construction College and Shenzhen Polytechnic, all of which have existing tourism and hospitality management programmes.
The company first entered China 27 years ago and currently employs 52,000 staff in the country. It now plans to double its presence in the country with opening of 150 hotels in the next five years, requiring an additional 90,000 employees.
The IHG Academy concept was launched in China in June 2006 and sees IHG combine with local tourism colleges or vocational institutions in the areas of internships and special lectures by senior IHG executives. Every year, the IHG Academies collectively produce more than 5,000 graduates.
“We believe that attracting, training and retaining qualified talents is crucial to our success. It is our working staff who make us stand out from competitions and delivers our brand promises. As the industry leader, we are responsible and committed to investing in and nurturing local talents. This is not just for IHG, but for the sustained and greater prosperity of the hospitality industry as a whole,” said Winnie Ng, Vice President of Human Resources for IHG Greater China.
Having established its first Chinese academy in Shanghai five years ago, IHG doubled the number of programmes it offered in 2008, and the concept has now expanded to 23 colleges in 10 cities including Chongqing, Jinan, Shunde, Zhengzhou, Shenzhen, Nanjing and Hangzhou.
