The Indian government is reportedly on the verge of signing an agreement for the Hyperloop – Elon Musk’s new ultra-fast public transport solution.
The Economic Times reported Bibop Gresta, co-founder of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, as saying that a Letter of Intent (LoI) for the project is “sitting on the desk” of India’s Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari. Once signed, the tube-style transport system could be ready within four years.
“He has had the LoI for about two weeks now. Once it is signed we have a feasibility study that takes six to eight months. Then after we get land permits and appropriate regulation, we can build a technically feasible Hyperloop in 38 months,” Gresta told the newspaper.
He added that the Hyperloop was a cost-effective alternative to India’s planned high-speed rail network.
“You are going to spend US$12 billion on a bullet train? Put US$1 billion in Hyperloop and you will never need a bullet train,” Gresta commented.
The Hyperloop concept involves firing carriages of passengers or cargo through tubes at speeds potentially exceeding 1,000kph. The route of India’s Hyperloop has not been revealed.
