Indian air traffic controllers have tested a demonstration flight that seeks to determine new air routes that are more fuel-efficient than the current ones. A report in livemint.om said these next-generation air routes could lead to savings on fuel and flying time as well as cutting carbon dioxide emissions.”It will allow the airline to maximide use of winds, on-board avionics and meteorological updates to chart and file the most efficient flight path,” an unnamed consultant was quoted saying. The Perth-Dubai demonstration flight was operated by Emirates and supported by a senior Mumbai air traffic control team, the paper said, quoting senior officials in Mumbai. The report said India’s airlines would welcome any savings on fuel which accounts for up to 40% of their operating costs. Sales tax on the fuel can be as much as 24%.
