India’s domestic aviation sector continued to experience strong double-digit growth in July 2015, as the country’s economic growth fuelled demand for flights.
According to the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), domestic passenger traffic in India surged 28.1% (in terms of revenue passenger kilometres, or RPK) in July. This exceeded the 10.1% extra seat capacity airlines added, allowing average cabin load factors to jump to 80.7%.
IATA stated that the growth was caused by “significant increases in service frequencies and improvements in economic growth”.
India’s growth was the highest of all major global domestic markets, including the three other BRIC nations: China (+10.9%), Russia (+8.8%) and Brazil (+6.6%). The global average growth in domestic air traffic was +7.6%.
India has now registered double-digit year-on-year growth, in terms of RPK, for 11 consecutive months stretching back to September 2015.
