Indian tourist arrivals surge in April

International visitor arrivals to India continued to surge in April, with the country witnessing double-digit growth.
According to data compiled by the country’s Ministry of Tourism, a total of 599,000 international visitors entered India last month, marking an increase of 10.7% compared to the 542,000 seen in the same month in 2015.
Bangladesh was India’s largest source market in April, accounting for 18.1% of total visitors. The US (12.2%) was second, followed by the UK (9.6%), Sri Lanka (3.7%) and Malaysia (3.2%). China (3.1%), Australia (3.1%), Germany (3.0%), France (2.9%) and Canada (2.8%) complete the top 10.
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport handled the highest number of arriving visitors during the month (29.0% of the total), followed by Mumbai Airport (16.9%), the Haridaspur land border with Bangladesh (9.8%), Chennai Airport (7.8%)and Bengaluru Airport (6.7%).
International tourism revenues also saw double-digit growth in April 2016, rising 15.3% year-on-year to INR116.37 billion (approx. US$1.75bn).
For the first four months of the year, India’s visitor arrivals have increased 10.1% to 3.11m, while tourism revenues have climbed 15.7% to INR520.48bn.
